Dear families,
First and foremost, I hope you all are staying safe and healthy. Secondly, thank you so much for taking the time to complete the survey. Your responses will help better guide our lesson planning to ensure all students have equitable access to curriculum. As you know, the district has provided us this week to prep, collaborate and plan for distance learning, which will officially begin April 13th. I know many of you have questions and concerns as to what that will entail. I will provide some information I know is certain as of now.
For our virtual meetings, CVESD has strongly advised against the use of Zoom for security reasons, and they are only supporting the use of video conferencing through the district platform – Microsoft Teams in Office 365. Our first meeting will be on Monday, April 13 at 11AM for about an hour or so to catch up as well as explain and answer any of their questions. Here are the directions to log in. Follow these steps for Monday April 13th, a few minutes before 11:00am. You can also do steps 1-5 ahead of time as a trial run.
If you are unable to join the check-in, no worries at all. This is optional, but would be the easiest way for me to give them the information needed. I have been thinking of the students a lot these days and look forward to seeing and catching up with all of them! Thank you all for your patience and support. This is indeed an unprecedented time and a learning curve for us all. I am sure there are mistakes to be made and challenges to be faced, but I have no doubt we will overcome them together!

Stay safe and take care. Enjoy the time with your families! Welcome to quarter 3! First, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude for all of the generous and thoughtful gifts that I received before the holidays! It is truly an honor to get to spend each day learning with your wonderful 4th graders! Next, thank you all so much for your prompt response in making sure that all Legoland items were taken care of by our deadline of today. Everything was turned in and we are good to go! This week, we started off by creating our classroom harmony goals. Ask your 4th grader what their two favorite goals are. We also celebrated our Lexile gains. In math, we started our new module on fractions, and we're wrapping up our reading unit on points of view. We are back in science, studying energy. Soon we will be exploring cars, roller coasters, and some engineering using dominoes. As you know from this week's homework, we are writing speeches and that will continue on in week 21.

We will have our math Module 3 post-test on Wednesday. Expect to see the review homework coming home tomorrow. In Reading, we will begin looking at poetry features. Students will start drafting their second informative essay on octopuses. Have a great week! It was great to see all of the school spirit last week as our 4th graders dressed up for the various spirit days. I hope they enjoyed and learned a lot during Thursday's Red Ribbon and time capsule ceremony. Here is our class submission to the time capsule, as well as a couple of photos from the assembly: We have an exciting week of learning ahead of us! Tomorrow is our Living Coast field trip. Please send students to school with hats, as well as light sweaters in case it is chilly in the morning, as it tends to be along the coast. Also please remember to supply them with a lunch, unless you made note on the permission form that they needed a school-issued lunch. On Thursday, we will have our annual costume parade. Here are guidelines for the costumes: Halloween Costumes: Please note that students may wear Halloween Costumes for our Costume Parade ONLY. The Halloween Costume Parade will begin at 8:30 am to 9:30 am on the blacktop after teachers have taken attendance. Students must follow the following guidelines:
Finally, please see some announcements below. Have a great week! The 5th Annual parent academy is tomorrow! I gave you the flyer during parent conferences. One of the presenters this year is Melissa Hughes. She was formerly one of our outstanding 6th grade teachers here at Camarena before moving to CVESD's Energy Station. She will be presenting on how parents can help their children to identify and explore their personal interests, and how their strengths and interests can lead to success in the future! Please register for this free event here. Red Ribbon week is next week. Please visit our Camarena Elementary Blog for the schedule for the dress up days.
This week we have been engaging in collaborative conversations across our reading and science content areas. Students have been comparing and contrasting characters within stories, characters across multiple stories, and also about the function of how our muscles and bones work together to enable movement. Discussions have been lively with everyone having the opportunity to practice their skills of discussion and active listening. I hope you're having a fantastic fall break with your 4th grader! Hopefully they're able to get in some Achieve and Scootpad practice if they've got some extra time on their hands. For those who are doing Achieve on an iPad at home, I have some exciting news! I mentioned during conferences that it is important for students to have the article and questions side-by-side as they're working so that they can easily refer back to the article as they're answering questions. It is now possible on iPad if it is upgraded to iPad iOS 13.1, which recently got released. Once your iPad is updated to the newest iOS, here is a video on how to get the article and questions side-by-side.
